Johnny Appleseed

Johnny Appleseed Books_edited-2

Oh how I wish you could smell my house right now!  It has that delightful aroma of fall.  Today, we studied John Chapman more commonly known as Johnny Appleseed.  In celebration we made apple chips sprinkled with freshly ground cinnamon and sugar.  They made a seriously delicious fall snack.  We also read several books which we really enjoyed.  They were all wonderful but Steven Kellog’s “Johnny Appleseed” really helped us to understand who John Chapman was and why he has become a piece of Americana folk lore.  “Johnny Appleseed” by Reeve Lindbergh and illustrated by Kathy Jakobsen is another book that truly stood out in our readings.  The book is in actuality a poem about Johnny Appleseed.  It is beautifully composed and oh my the illustrations.  They are just phenomenal.  They are painted much in the style of Grandma Moses.  While reading this book I couldn’t help but be reminded how beautiful and picturesque this country is.
