This is such a fun and easy experiment. My eleven year old had a ball experimenting with just the right distance to keep her “butterfly” flying. All you need is tissue paper, a needle, thread and a strong magnet. I prefer to use a magnet wand. They can be purchased inexpensively at education stores or online (here). Cut a small piece of tissue paper that resembles the shape of a butterfly. Thread the needle with a short piece of thread. Insert the needle through the tissue paper. Your butterfly is now ready for flight! We discussed magnetic poles and magnetic force-fields when conducting this experiment.
